Overview
How is your general mood every day? If your answer is negative, you are not alone. Did you know that one in three Americans will suffer from anxiety and/or depression in their lifetime, and 32 million Americans suffer from a variety of mental disorders each year? The two most common types of these mental disorders are anxiety and depression, both of which can have serious consequences for those who suffer from them. Typically people turn to antidepressants and/or tranquilizers to cure these afflictions, but with disappointing results and unwanted side effects. Hormonal and nutritional deficiencies are often the culprits causing these conditions. Balancing hormones and improving nutrition choices can easily calm your anxiety and improve your mood.
Anxiety
About ten percent of Americans experience serious or long-term anxiety. For these people, even the smallest amount of worry can cause anxiety, and this burden often worsens with age. Tranquilizers are often prescribed, but without sufficient results. Correcting hormonal imbalances and nutritional deficiencies can also alleviate anxiety and excessive worrying.
Depression
More than twenty percent of Americans experience depression in their lifetimes, occurring twice as much in women as in men. This is not the type of depression which comes after trauma or loss, but clinical depression which has a lasting effect and without a specific cause. You may feel like you have no purpose, you feel powerless, you don’t look forward to your daily activities, you become irritated with minor things, and/or you are in a constant bad mood. This type of depression can severely damage your relationships and career and make you feel hurt and dissatisfied. Depression is one of the most common complaints and ranges from mild to serious, including suicide. Often, depression is brought on by a lack of hormones, which may be attributed to the prevalence of depression in women.
Neurotransmitters
Neurotransmitters located in the brain are responsible for our moods and feelings. Examples of neurotransmitters you have probably heard of are serotonin, dopamine, and epinephrine, but there are many others. Using specialized tests, a REVITA medical physician can determine if your neurotransmitters are within optimal range. It is our belief that understanding the root cause of the mood issue is the first step in treatment, rather than “Try this chemical anti-depressant and see me back in the three months to see how you feel.” Most people on antidepressants want to get off of them and often experience many undesirable side effects. Our treatment plan is premised on offering natural supplements based on your lab results.
Questions
Nutrition and Mood
A combination of nutritional and hormonal deficiencies can be at the root of anxiety or depression and can also make these conditions worse. A proper diet is an essential support system for hormone treatments. Our physician and REVITA Wellness Director can recommend beneficial nutritional choices and supplements to enhance the positive effects of our hormone treatments in order to most effectively curb any anxiety or depression you are experiencing.
Movement and Mood
Studies show mood improves with movement. Motion creates emotion! More active people report lower instances of depression. Performing aerobic exercises for a set period of time at a set heart rate will improve mood. Our wellness specialist can discuss how to calculate your ideal heart rate and automatically monitor it while you exercise. Yoga and meditation have been show to significantly improve outlook and mood. Yoga opens the body and clears the mind. Yoga coupled with meditation leaves most people feeling fresh, lifted and a renewed sense of self and well-being.
Anxiety/Depression in the morning or while inactive
Do you wake up on the “wrong side of the bed” every day? Do you lie in bed in the morning anxious about the day’s challenges? Do you feel this anxiety or depression throughout the day when at rest? You might be known as the person who never stops moving or always remains active, but only you know it is because you are trying to avoid these ‘blues.’ If this is the case, you may be thyroid deficient. Thyroid hormone therapy can help you overcome your anxiety and depression, typically in one to four months. Our doctor can test you and treat you if you are thyroid deficient. Thyroid treatment has a number of other beneficial effects as well.
Men: Irritability, Nervousness, Anxiety, Excitability
Men who experience irritability, anxiety, depression, feeling ill at ease or down, or decreased energy may have low testosterone levels and/or low DHEA. Our physician can test you for these deficiencies. If treatments are needed, testosterone and/or DHEA therapy will either decrease or eliminate these ailments. DHEA helps you to be reasonable and rational during life’s up and downs, while testosterone can help you feel upbeat, motivated, energetic, determined, fearless, and better able to face challenges.
Women: Feeling Nervous, Aggressive, Worry; or Irritable during second half of menstrual cycle
The most common contributor to anxiety in women, particularly when associated with the menstrual cycle, is lack of progesterone.
Lack of progesterone can make a woman irritable, nervous, worrisome, aggressive, and quarrelsome. Progesterone therapy can make a woman sleep better and feel peaceful, calm, placid, and receptive. Having the right level of progesterone is also a cornerstone for good overall physical and mental balance. Our REVITA physician will test you for progesterone deficiency. If lab results indicate a deficiency, progesterone therapy can relieve anxiety and pain. DHEA and testosterone therapy can also help diminish anxiety.
Anxiety disrupting career, relationships, and self confidence
People who are anxious, seek isolation to the point of interfering with career and relationships, worry about senseless issues, procrastinate, and lack self confidence may be deficient in certain hormones. Our doctor can test you for low hormone levels. If necessary, hormone therapy can decrease anxiety and induce serenity to the point of transforming your life.
Anxiety during stress or confronting/escaping a situation, set off by small things
Cortisol enables you to withstand stress without feeling anxious and provides energy to face unexpected situations. Our doctor can test you for cortisol deficiency. If your levels are low, natural remedies or, if needed, prescription medications can help you overcome your anxiety and confront stressful situations.
Sleeplessness due to nighttime anxiety
Anxiety that occurs at night can be attributed to melatonin. Melatonin has a number of beneficial effects for sleeplessness and can relax your mind and your muscles. Women, if you have low progesterone levels, you typically will have low melatonin because it is a byproduct of progesterone.
Men: Constant depression
Depression in men often indicates low testosterone levels. Conversely, happiness typically increases testosterone. Our physician can test your testosterone level. If you are deficient, testosterone therapy can significantly decrease or eradicate depression in men.
Women: Constant depression
Testosterone is also an essential mood stabilizer in women, adding self-confidence, resolve, good resistance to stress, and desire for life and sexual desire. Testosterone also works very well with estrogen, which increases feelings of happiness and optimism. Estrogen works similarly to some prescription antidepressants by blocking monoamine oxidase, which eliminates mood-stimulating neurotransmitters. A doctor at REVITA Medical can test you for low levels of testosterone and estrogen, and devise a treatment plan for you if deficiencies are found.
Sensitivity to stress/Pessimism/Distracted/Confusion/Difficulty facing situations
Deficiency of cortisol (which fights stress) can cause depression, confusion, distraction, difficulty organizing ideas, pessimism, feelings of defeat, and inability to face difficult situations. In depressed patients, cortisol levels remain constant, yet cortisol is meant to increase during stress and decrease when calm. Balanced cortisol can give you the power to face stressful situations, curb depression and more. Our doctor can test and treat you for imbalanced cortisol.
Vulnerability to stress/Frequent bouts of depression/Feeling fragile
Depressed people who are very vulnerable to stress and in a fragile mental state are very likely to be deficient in certain hormones, regardless of age. Our doctor can test you for deficiency of hormones. If treatment is necessary, hormone therapy can help you resist stress and increase self-confidence and serenity, creating a better quality of life overall.

“He (a medical hormone specialist) took one look (at my labs) and said ‘your hormone tank is empty. That’s why you feel like your life force is being drained.’ My eyes welled with tears. Finally someone understood and had a solution. After one day on bio-identical estrogen, I felt the veil lift. After three days I was literally singing and had a skip in my step.”

I get out a lot more because I want to. I just went out the other night with friends for a birthday party. I never used to do that. I used to find excuses. I would normally have said I can’t go out because of my son, I need to stay with him. I feel so much better about being out and about. It’s not forced anymore.”

~Vern, Denver, 51
REVITA: “Your husband has been on the program for a while and has given us a testimony on the website, but as his wife of 25 years, what would you say the changes in your husband have been?”
