Healthy Eating While Aging

There are no restrictions when it comes to eating healthy. In the early and active years of life, the metabolism is active and that makes up for any diet deficiencies. The situation however changes as one grows older. The body requires more time to process food nutrients and as such the tendons, bones, muscles and the skin begin to decline. Everything slows down because the body is not burning calories as it used to. The best way to delay the aging process, make skin supple, strengthen the bones and make the senses more alert is by eating healthy. A balanced diet can also fight disease and reduce the risks of contracting diseases.

A healthy diet comprises of carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, proteins, water and fiber. The diet should also be rich in diary and milk products as well as the recommended quantities of sugars and fats. One should seek professional advice before using the nutritional supplements with such a healthy diet. Since the body is slowing down as one ages, it is advisable to reduce sugar and salt intake in the diet. Nevertheless, there are certain times when sugary foods may be recommended to a senior person, for example, when the person needs to add weight. Saturated fats should also be avoided if one has lost weight.

Iron absorption becomes harder with age advancement and as such many people become anemic. Foods rich in iron must therefore be included in an elderly diet. Vitamin C assists in iron absorption and must also be part of the diet. Since calcium loss in the bones may result to osteoporosis, it is recommended that dairy and milk products be part of the diet to counteract that loss. Vitamin D supplements are also known to be rich in calcium. In essence, a good diet boosts the immune system and keeps the tissues strong and maintains high energy levels within the body.
