Erectile Dysfunction Treatment

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a medical term that describes the inability to achieve and/or maintain an erect penis useful for sexual intercourse.  All men experience difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection at some point in their lives, but ED implies repeated or constant inability to achieve a sufficient erection.  Over 20 million men in the U.S. alone are affected by ED.  While the majority of these men are over 40, ED can occur at any age.

Achieving a normal erection is a complicated process, requiring interactions between the brain, properly functioning nervous system, adequate circulation to the penis, and testosterone.  Erectile dysfunction can occur if some or all of these processes are not functioning properly.  Premature ejaculation, infertility, or low sex drive are not the same as erectile dysfunction, though one or more of these conditions may be associated with it.

Erectile dysfunction is not a life-threatening condition.  However, ED can seriously affect your emotional health and sense of self-worth, or hinder your ability to father a child.  ED does not have to be just another part of getting older or something you have to accept as part of your life.  There are treatment options available.  Almost all men of any age can be treated for ED, provided that your doctor says you are physically fit enough for intercourse.  Whether to pursue treatment options is up to you and your partner.

The specific cause of ED is unknown.  Erectile dysfunction can be a sign of a health condition such as heart disease or poorly maintained diabetes.  Treating these problems can reverse ED.  General ED may also be treated with the use of oral medications, such as Viagra or Cialis.  These are considered safe and can be effective, but only for those who are eligible.  For example, men who take heart medications called nitrates are not advised to take some of these oral medications, while others simply don’t respond to them.

Treatment Options at REVITA

For those who cannot take oral medications or do not respond to them, there are other options available.  Our REVITA physician can develop a custom treatment for your erectile dysfunction specifically tailored to your needs.  These treatments, applied directly to the penis, relax the muscles that surround the blood vessels in the penis.  Blood flow is increased, producing an erection within 5 to 20 minutes.  The erection may last 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the treatment you need.

80 to 90 percent of men who use these treatments are able to reach a firm erection useful for sexual intercourse.  The drugs our physician uses have been widely prescribed since the 1980′s and are considered to be safe and effective.  Our REVITA physician will prescribe the lowest effective dose in order to mitigate the chance of side effects or complications.

Erectile Dysfunction and Testosterone

Our REVITA physician can also test and treat you for testosterone deficiency.  One of the most recognized effects of low testosterone is erectile dysfunction.  If testosterone levels are low, the sexual centers in the brain that help men maintain erection are less activated and sexual desire is often diminished.  Testosterone deficiency can cause other negative effects such as lack of energy, moodiness, and depression, all of which are risk factors for erectile dysfunction.  Testosterone therapy can stimulate sexual desire and may be considered as a treatment for erectile dysfunction if you are deficient.

Erectile Dysfunction and Natural Supplements

Studies have shown that 92.5% of men taking natural supplements eliminated erectile dysfunction.  Our REVITA physician can recommend these types of supplements for treating ED.  Our patients have experienced this type of success, as well as increased sexual desire and libido.

Our men’s health program at REVITA is centered on a holistic approach, starting with a comprehensive evaluation of your needs and recommending a treatment plan with phenomenal results that our patients have already experienced.
