BHRT (bioidentical hormone replacement therapy) is a hot topic which has been covered by celebrity wellness advocates such as Oprah, Robin McGraw (Dr. Phil’s wife), Suzanne Somers, Dr. Oz, Dr. Christine Northrope (featured on Oprah and recently on PBS) and many others. Now, this important health topic for women and men is covered in a comedic manner in ‘Sex in the City 2’. Samantha (Kim Cattrall) is fighting aging and menopausal symptoms and as she explains in a scene in the movie, she’s on on a regimen of hormones and supplements to “trick my body into thinking it’s younger.” She takes her direction from Suzanne Somers book “Breakthrough” which is considered the Bible by Samatha and other women to aging well.
Although she doesn’t seem to need it, Samantha proclaims her sex drive is back thanks to a combination of progesterone, estrogen, and testosterone creams. She is also very proactive, maybe too much so, about her vitamin intake, taking a page out of Suzanne Somers book who takes just about every wellness supplement available. Yet, Somers certainly doesn’t have the energy and appearance of a 62-year old.
According to many doctors there is little risk and many more benefits to short term and long term wellness to correct hormone deficiencies that often occur with age and/or with the onstage of menopause. Initial controversy with hormone replacement was centered on the Women’s Health Initiative which looked at drugs such as Premarin, and Prempro. Although, according to the Mayo Clinic, “The absolute risk to an individual woman taking hormone therapy is quite low.” Doctors still steer patients away from taking these synthetics medications.
Thanks to all of the recent press, patients with symptoms are now much more educated on bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. REVITA physicians suggest working with a properly trained doctor. The doctor should perform detailed testing and then offer medicines custom tailored to suit an individual’s needs. Doctor’s should start with minimum doses and then increase them until the patients feel like themselves again.
