When we talk about the many benefits of progesterone on prolonged health and vitality and its crucial role in ongoing heart health, it should not be assumed that these statements are in any way simply manufactured or inferred from the natural function of progesterone in younger women. Far from it. Progesterone, both bioidentical and synthetic have been thoroughly put through the scientific ringer of trial and research.
You are likely already familiar with the findings published by the Women’s Health Initiative which demonstrated the negative impact of synthetic hormones, particularly the synthetic progestin Provera® and the synthetic estrogen Premarin®, on heart health. It was this study that lead to widespread discontinuation of hormone replacement therapy and the still prevalent negative view of it. However, many are still unaware of the numerous studies that have demonstrated the ability of bioidentical progesterone to work with estrogen to promote a healthy heart and reduce the chance for stroke.
In German a study was conducted across a large number of treatment centers. Physicians in these centers observed postmenopausal women undergoing two distinct treatments using natural progesterone and estrogen. One group of women received continual treatment with natural progesterone and estradiol, while the other women alternated successively around the midpoint of their monthly cycles. While both groups reported relief from the symptoms of menopause and both had lower cholesterol levels, the cholesterol levels of those women receiving continuous progesterone throughout the treatment were substantially lower.
Another long term study, the Postmenopausal Estrogen/Progestin Interventions Trial (PEPI Trial) showed conclusively that hormone replacement therapy with natural estrogen accompanied by natural progesterone lowered cholesterol levels and protected the heart more effectively than treatment with estrogen alone. This study also emphasized that only bioidentical hormones, not synthetics, provided these benefits to the heart.
Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy provides every woman with the chance to prolong her youthfulness, vitality and health long after menopause. What good is this restored vitality if it carries with it a deadly risk? Science has shown that bioidentical progesterone, when used in conjunction with natural estrogen provides the solution. It reduces cholesterol buildup, it promotes a healthy heart and it reduces the chance of stroke. If you are considering hormone replacement therapy, it is in your best interest to insist on natural hormones or to seek out a hormone specialist who fully understands the importance of using bioidentical hormones.
